One of our favorite Bartenders:
Steve Twilley is our bartender of the month for June 2009. A very friendly and accommodating man with plenty of experience behind the bar, he can be found serving up shots most nights at Luckie's Tavern in Power Plant.Tell us a bit about yourself.
Well, I'm from Salisbury, MD, and I held a construction company down there, was a bartender before that, a general manager even before that, and I just decided to move up here and get away from the small town atmosphere. My old roommate is the general manager here and got me a position here as bartender.
How long have you been bartending?
For about thirteen years. It's been pretty wild.
Why did you decide to get into bartending?
The social atmosphere, it's a lot of fun. I used to bartend in Ocean City - it's the thing to do, everyone bartends down there. It's either restaurant, hotel, or construction, and I did a little bit of everything.
What is your favorite drink to make?
This drink I made up - it's called Fruity Pebbles. It's blueberry vodka, triple sec, pineapple and cranberry juice. It tastes exactly like Fruity Pebbles (the cereal). It's my favorite to give out because it's like my signature move.
What is your least favorite drink to make?
I'm gonna have to say mojito. Anything with a mudder is just bad.
Mojito? Usually people say Long Island Iced Teas or something.
I love Long Islands. But put a mudder in my hand and it's the end of the world.
What do you think a drink says about a person?
I don't think it says much. It's all about timing. Some people drink just to - like I'll just do a shot of Jack anytime because I want to, or I'll drink a blueberry and Sprite. I don't think it says much about a person themselves, such as if you just want something sweet, like a Jeremiah Weed and lemonade, or want like a beer. It's just what you want at that time.
Who's your favorite type of customer?
My favorite type of customer... are the hot chicks. Of course, like I'll pour shots in their mouth while they're dancing. It's awesome.
What's your favorite drink?
Wow... that's a very tough question. I think right now I'm gonna have to say Jeremiah Weed, which is a sweet tea vodka. It tastes just like the McDonald's sweet tea, only it gets you buzzed. It's hot out right now, so at this moment it's my favorite drink.
Well then what do you drink during the winter? What warms you up?
I'm more of a beer guy during the winter. Maybe VO [Ed. - Seagram's Whisky VO] and Seven-Up, or a rum and coke, because it's a little darker in the winter, you know?
Makes sense. What's the weirdest thing you've seen on the job?
On the job? Um, there's naked girls here every once in a while that take their tops off for no reason, like it's allowed. They love doing it. (Laughs) Yeah, that's probably the weirdest thing. Actually, one of our DJs here came over in a speedo. That was really weird.
Heh, alright. Was there like hair coming out in places?
No, there wasn't anything coming out of anywhere. Like, it was cold out, so nothing was coming out.
I bet that reflects real well on them.
Yeah, that was the weirdest thing I've seen.
Karaoke - good or evil?
I like it. I do. I think it's a good thing. It brings people out to a bar and it gives them something to do. Everybody interacts with everybody else, and I think it's good. Not everybody can sing, but even the bad ones entertain - like it gives something to laugh at, and it builds interaction. For a bar, that's a good thing to have.
Cool. Got any parting comments for us?
Not really - just come to Luckie's Tavern!
